Sir Adolphus William Ward (1837-1924), historian, was born at Hampstead, Middlesex, on 2 December 1837. He was educated in Germany and Bury St Edmunds before entering Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1855 (B.A., 1859; M.A., 1862), where he became a Fellow in 1862. He entered the Inner Temple in 1860, and was called to the bar in 1866, but never practised law. Princess Sophia Dorothea of Celle (1666-1726) married George Lewis, the future King George I, on 21 November 1682. She bore him two children, including the future George II, but their relationship cooled, and she was accused of intriguing with Count Philip Christopher Graf von Knigsmark (1665-1694), a member of the Swedish nobility and an adventurer.
